Q&A with Tony Yandek, Double Black Lead Engineer

What were the development goals for this project?
We wanted to develop a tire that would be ideal for most World Cup tracks without being bound to design restrictions or marketing obligations. We needed to develop a tire that would work just as well in the fresh cut loam section of the track as the cement-like bike park berms, and so we rigorously tested every tire we saw at the World Cup and learned from it.

Would you recommend this tire to be run front, rear or both?
All of the above! It’s a great tire for all-condition riding, from loam to hardpack; so it depends on your style and the terrain you’re riding. It’s the most versatile MTB tire we’ve developed so far.

What sets this tire apart from the competition?
The amount of R&D resources we’ve put into this project. Working through many prototype layups, experimenting with new materials and to top it off - working directly with some of the worlds best downhill riders.

Hellkat, Pinner, Double Black – what tire would you pick for what terrain and why?
The Hellkat is ideal for fresh-cut loam tracks and wet-weather loose terrain. The Pinner works best on hardpack and rocky terrain, at bike parks and in dry climates. The Double Black is a true do-it-all tire. Works just as well on hardpack as it does on loose terrain. Unsure of the conditions? Might rain? Want only one set of tires for the local spot and the bike park? Take the Double Black.
